Dressember – Days 17-20

Dressember5

For the month of December I have committed to wearing a dress each day for Dressember, a fundraiser to support the elimiation of human trafficking world-wide (you can read my post about Dressember here if you’d like to learn more: Dressember).

I joined a group of Disneybounders organized by Courtney at @libraryladylife and we are following prompts to dress for the month. Here are the prompts:

Today I’m looking back at days 17-20 to talk about my outfit choices.

Day 17 – Fantasia

Fantasia is one of my favorite movies from when I was a child because it always reminds me of my grandparents. It was one of the only kids movies they owned so we would watch it a lot at their house. I’ve always wanted to Disneybound as Sorcerer Mickey, but I never had the right outfit. When I woke up the day before this prompt I remembered this red dress that I had – it was a little fancy but it worked well for Sorcerer Mickey. I then paired it with my trusty blue cardigan and blue leggings and topped it all off with my star necklace.

Day 18 – Inside Out

Inside Out day was sort of a no-brainer for me because I Disneybounded as Disgust last year for Dapper Day. This meant I already had the perfect dress and pink neck scarf for the look. I also pulled out a pair of green leggings and my pink sweater (because it’s colder in PA/NJ than FL). I added a throwback photo from last year because I am still so proud of how great Reenie, Dom, and I looked on Dapper Day last year as Fear, Anger, and Disgust meeting Joy and Sadness at Epcot.

Day 19 – Mary Poppins Returns Characters

I have not yet seen Mary Poppins Returns so this made Disneybounding a little difficult for 12/19. At the beginning of the month I tried to plan out most of my outfits and so I tried to google image search anything from the new movie. In some of the movie posters Mary was wearing a blue coat and in some a red coat. Since I have an amazing red dress coat, I chose to wear my blue dress with my red dress coat over it. I also added my blue polka dot scarf since she is wearing a lot of polka dots in the movie posters. I was happy with how it came out – now I just have to watch the movie!

Day 20 – Disney Villains

I chose the Evil Queen for 12/20 because I had dressed up as her for Halloween this year and could easily transform my costume into a Disneybound. Instead of a black cape, I layered my long black sweater over the same purple dress I wore on Halloween. I then pinned the apple brooch to my sweater, traded my crown for a gold headband, and added some black leggings (because it’s COLD!).

Thanks for following along!

Dressember

I was introduced to Dressember by a fellow Disneybounder [in 2018] when she invited me to participate and be a part of her team. Dressember is an organization that’s purpose is to put an end to Human Trafficking / Modern Day Slavery.

When I first checked out their website, I thought “wow, that’s a really difficult thing to accomplish”, but I was interested in learning more. In college I did a lot more outreach and social justice work and to me, this felt like a pull back to my roots. There are many causes that have caught my attention before, one being hunger and homelessness, and this seemed to go hand-in-hand with outreach I had previously done. Not saying that hunger and homelessness directly correlates to human trafficking, but it can be a cause or effect of someone being trafficked. For example, many traffickers attract their targets by advertising that they provide meals and/or shelter for a job performed. This is usually misrepresentation and is one of the many ways people are lured into the human trafficking rings. Additionally, victims who finally get out, can find themselves in a dire situation, having no one to turn to. What the organizations partnering with Dressember do is provide outreach to victims such as after-care kits as well as bigger benefits like funding rescue missions. In this way, I felt it aligned to my values and would enable me to help others – even in a small way.

The concept of Dressember is to wear a dress or tie every day for the month of December to raise awareness and fund-raise for these organizations that are helping victims of human trafficking. The idea of adding fashion also promotes staying away from “fast fashion” (where workers could be overworked and underpaid) and leaning towards reusing what we have, thrifting what we don’t, and if necessary to buy, buying fair trade. So, in addition to wearing a dress every day this month, I am also only using clothing I already own.

Welcome to my *NEW* Style Blog

Thanks for joining me on this adventure through my closet! Now, I don’t consider myself stylish, but I have my own style and this blog is meant to share that with you all.

What I am going to do with this blog is just talk about my outfits and outfit choices, probably mostly as it relates to Disneybounding. I hope to include some cosplay in the coming year, I’ll probably talk about trying to outfit-match with my daughter, and I’ll also probably talk about day-to-day wear. I’m really just giving insight into my style choices and getting real about what’s behind the ‘gram.
